Edmund's Minerals
Gypsum is a very soft mineral that, in all its varieties, can be scratched with a fingernail. Because it has natural insulating properties, it also feels warm to the touch.
Selenite and satin spar are two colorless varieties of gypsum, with satin spar being the silkier, fibrous, and more translucent of the two.
When cut across the fibers and polished on the ends, satin spar shows it is a natural fiber optic material. Its parallel fibers exhibit total internal reflection, guiding light along the length of the fibers.
When these carefully sculpted Moroccan columns of gypsum are placed on the included light stand, they will appear to transmit and change color with the lights beneath them.
These unique conversation pieces come in two sizes: approximately 5" in height and 2" diameter at the base (small), and 7" in height with 3" in diameter at the base (large). The included L.E.D. light stand uses 3 "AA" batteries (supplied). Illuminate your room with these natural fiber optic columns.
(Note: It is not recommended to leave any form or variety of gypsum submerged in water as it will either dissolve or degrade the mineral. Detergents, soaps, and even warm water should be avoided as they affect the column's luster.)
