A science class staple, the Van de Graaff generator is an electrostatic machine that uses a moving belt to accumulate very high voltages on a hollow metal globe. Named after the American physicist of the same name, this generator can be used to perform electrostatic experiments on a spectacular scale.
This generator relies on high quality rugged construction for its long life and has a 10” diameter metal sphere. The column between the base and sphere that houses the belt is clear lucite; the generator comes with one extra belt. Total height: 30". This unit has the potential of developing 400,000 volts and is not a toy. For use only with adult supervision.
The variable speed motor can be used to vary the rate of charge build-up and has a control knob on the base of the generator, near the on/off switch.
Designed for operation on 120V, ac, with a three wire grounded cord, it is capable of generating sparks up to 8” long!
A complete instruction manual details safety procedures and guides you through several exeriments.
Accessories for more involved experimentation also available. Use of a rubber mat recommended but not included.
