We've got this for my son last Christmas. He really enjoys playing with it when he gets it out.

To say I was disappointed when I opened the box, is an understatement. I can't believe I paid for a bag of tooth pics. I would not recomend this item to anyone.

Recently, we changed the supply of the wood. The sticks are currently made in house so they are better quality than before - more square and correct to size to within +/- .005" We also improved the fit of the parts.

The main problem with this trebuchet is that there is no way to control the release point. The wooden release pin is at a fixed angle. The instruction seem to indicate that shortening it (an irreversible action) will cause an earlier release, but I found this not to be true. The angle needs to be adjusted. All of my projectiles were release on a nearly horizontal trajectory and went about six feet. The sling design is also very poor--projectiles won't stay put prior to launch. A big disappointment.

Unfortunately I recommended this item to the other reviewer, Frank, before I had tried building it. The quality of the workmanship of the parts is poor. Holes are drilled off center. Miter cuts are not accurate. I found that the kit required considerable reworking to be buildable as shipped.

My 10-year-old son enjoyed building the trebuchet but needed more help from me than he would have liked because of defects in the kit. We needed to bore out every drilled hole and sand down all dowel pieces quite a bit in order to fit the two together. Ultimately the throwing arm ended up quite crooked because the holes were drilled asymmetrically. For a few pieces of balsa, a screw, a square of leather, and some string the precision of drilled holes should be much better than it is. It flings things like marbles quite well but plastic cows are not as easily sent over the ramparts.

I had fun building this kit with my 10-year-old son, but I would have had a lot more fun f the instructions weren't so vague in spots, particularly at the end. I had to write the company for more specific instructions on attaching the sling. The guy who responded was very nice about providing them, but the manufacturer could do all of its future customers a service by revising both the written instructions and the diagrams that accompany them. Otherwise, I'll take a trebuchet over a catapult any day.
