The original maps displayed on this antique globe were drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1541 and were revolutionary for that time. Voyages of Discovery were inspired by globes such as this one, and most often they were found in the homes of only royalty and very affluent citizens.
Now you can bring this classic decoration into your home. Mounted on an elaborate wood stand with turned supports and ball feet, the globe comes omplete with printed horizon ring, functioning dry compass, and bronze meridian circle.
The globe is hand made on a paper maché core, built up of twelve delicately colored gores, with polar calottes, and the oceans aare decorated with sailing ships.
