good tutorial introduction to mechanical relaxation oscillator
Reviewed By:
Bob (Columbia, SC)
I recommend this kit for anyone who learns by doing, and who wants to learn how a stirling cycle engine (or relaxation oscillator in general) works (or can be repaired).
All parts needed were supplied.
The assembly instructions were clear and easy-to-follow.
The subassembly explanations and testing made assembly error-tolerant.
After 4 hr assembly effort (mostly arranging household "lab" for subassembly testing), the first integration test failed, but the troubleshooting tips had it up and running in less than an additional 30min.
For two millenium relaxation oscillators have notoriously required one part manufactured with state-of-the-age precision. Since the middle ages, a relaxation oscillator has often been the showcase of a craftsman's skill and the bane of engineering students. The use of marbles and test tube ingeniously provides the low-friction near-gas-tight precision without obfuscating the principles.
