This black & white print features a photo of astronaut Malcolm “Scott” Carpenter and the Mercury Aurora 7 spacecraft.
Carpenter was one of the original seven astronauts selected for Project Mercury in 1959. Created by the newly formed NASA, Project Mercury was the United States’ answer to the Soviet Union’s space program.
Carpenter was the second American to orbit the earth and the fourth American in space. Carpenter’s Aurora 7 spacecraft attained a maximum altitude of 164 miles and an orbital velocity of 17,532 miles per hour.
