Wooden Recreation Kit of da Vinci's 15th Century Aerial Screw
Based on his drawing from the Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo’s Aerial Screw was to use the power of 4 men to push the canopy and outer ring. We have scaled down this flying machine so that you can use your own Lego people (we suggest using the ones with helmets!). The canopy/ support structure is removable, so you can experiment with your own helicopter or wing-type systems.
The Aerial Screw is one of da Vinci’s most iconic drawings, and defines an artist and inventor well ahead of his time. This working model uses a bevel gear, also from his drawings, to spin the canopy and support structure, illustrating a way Leonardo thought flight might be possible.
Measures 38 cm tall x 23 cm across once assembled.
For ages 9+.
